Holidays in Noli
Noli village of the towers
The story that you learn at school mentions 4 maritime republics but in reality they were more: Noli is one of the few forgotten republics. This small beautiful city, surmounted by the steep Mount Ursino that inspired Dante in the drafting of his Purgatory, had its six centuries of maritime glory and political independence, from 1202 to 1797.
They were brave people, the Nolesi: Anton da Noli, in 1461, sailed to descend the Atlantic and discovered the islands of Cape Verde, wishes the king of Portugal Henry II the Navigator. And they knew how to conserve their country well, with the stone porticos and towers, and the walls to the top of the mountain. They also knew how to conserve the coast around their city: a unique coast in Liguria, made of white limestone cliffs that plunged vertically into a sea of dazzling blue; cliffs that are the passion for the rock climbers of half Europe, who here can enjoy the strange thrill of climbing having around the shrill cries of the seagulls.
In the village, surrounded by three walls and dominated by the remains of the XI century castle, the Genoese urban influence is strong: of the 72 tower-houses that stood out in the twelfth century today there are 8 of them, including the municipal tower, complete 33 meters; everywhere lanes, loggias, squares animated by small shops full of focaccia and products from the countryside. The town overlooked the beach with a beautiful portico similar to the Genoese "Ripa" di Caricamento.
